Docente di Relazioni internazionali presso l’Institut d’études européennes dell’Università Paris VIII e l’American University of Paris. Ha insegnato anche all’Institut d’études politiques (IEP) e all’Institut national de langues orientales (INALCO) di Parigi.

Collabora con l’Institut de relations internationales et stratégiques" (IRIS). Autore di numerosi saggi, collabora con varie riviste specializzate, tra cui "Le Monde diplomatique" e "Les Cahiers de l’Orient", e è consulente di "France Culture". Negli anni Novanta, è stato caporedattore aggiunto di "The Asia Times".

Specialista di storia del sistema mondiale moderno, politica estera statunitense, economia politica dell’Asia orientale.
